Teign Men’s
1st XI Continue Hunt For League and Cup Double
An impressive weekend of hockey saw Teign
Men’s 1st XI take another step towards promotion and progress to the
Semi-Finals of the Devon Cup thanks to seven goals from in-form Striker Ben
Ayres.
On Saturday Teign travelled to Exeter
University to face ISCA C in a rematch of the title race that saw both clubs
promoted last season. In a closely contested first half Teign built a 2-0 lead
through Ben Ayres only to see ISCA peg a goal back and make a real fight of it.
Richie Fisher finished a lethal reverse stick strike to restore Teign’s two
goal advantage and they never looked back, adding two through George Burningham
and another brace from the sensational Ayres, making it four on the day for the
striker. The final score was 7-1 to Teign.
Ayres continued his rich form on Sunday as
Teign entertained North Devon in the Quarter Finals of the Devon Cup. Defeat for
Teign could easily have been forecasted given that North Devon had only lost
once all season in a higher division to Teign, but that was not to be the case.
Teign defended stoically for the first 15 minutes but it looked like they were
about to break under pressure when North Devon were awarded a penalty flick,
however, North Devon failed to capitalise as Teign keeper Oliver Robinson saved
majestically. This gave Teign the momentum and they scored three goals in as
many minutes through Ayres, Henry Burningham and George Burningham before adding
another from Ayres before the break. After the interval Teign added two more,
George Burningham converting from the penalty spot and Ayres rounding off
another impressive hat-trick, the game ending 6-1 to Teign.
This weekend Teign entertain Marjons B in a
clash that will determine the fate of the title as the sides are only separated
by a point.
