15.03.13 Mens 1s vs Tavistock (Home)

Teign Secure Promotion!
Teign Men’s 1st XI secured promotion out of Southern Division 2 with an impressive win over title rivals Tavistock. A hat-trick from Ben Ayres and two from Tom Brooks gave Teign a 5-1 victory that puts them in touching distance of their third consecutive league title.
The visitors came into the game knowing that anything short of victory would most likely void their own aspirations of promotions, so the pre-game talk was inevitably about showing desire and appetite for a fixture that had resulted in a nervy goalless draw when the two teams faced each other earlier in the season. In front of a packed home crowd and in glorious sunshine, Teign shook off any sign of nerves and gave a display of hockey worthy of the occasion.
The early exchanges between the two teams hinted at another even game but the opening goal did not take long to arrive. Henry Burningham feed the ball into George Burningham on the edge of the D who squared for Ayres to finish sensationally into the top corner. The quality of the goal clearly dented Tavistock’s confidence and they began to buckle under the pressure, conceding a short corner. The same trio were involved again; George Burningham pushed the ball out to Henry who fired across goal for Ayres to acrobatically deflect towards goal, only to be stopped on the line by the body of a Tavistock defender. Tom Brooks coolly dispatched the penalty flick.  Ayres converted his second just before the interval with a well-placed low shot leaving Tavistock dejected at the break.
The second half opened with another Teign goal, this time Tom Brooks diving low to add his second.  Tavistock put in a spirited performance and got a goal back through their dangerous striker Simon Fenwick, but Teign never looked under any pressure with the scoreboard advantage they had. As the game ran to a close there was enough time for Ayres to complete his fifth hat-trick of the season although the youngster Brooks took the man of the match award for yet another solid performance on the left wing.
Teign travel to East Devon this weekend needing a win to secure the league title.
