Teign Men’s 1st vs East Devon A
Teign Men’s 1st team secured their third
successive title with a hard-fought win away to East Devon A. Two Goals from
Ben Ayres and one from Henry Burningham provided a 3-1 win for Teign, who
remain unbeaten this season.
This was always a potential banana skin fixture for Teign as
East Devon are notoriously difficult to play at their own ground. With
promotion secure the previous week they had hoped to play expansive and
enjoyable hockey but unfortunately that was not the case. East Devon were well
organised and very disciplined in defence, stifling and frustrating Teign.
First half goals did come from Ayres and Burningham, but a goal back for East
Devon made for an uneasy half time team talk.
When the two teams came out for the second half East Devon
turned up the heat on Teign and had a prolonged period of pressure that could
easily have resulted in an equaliser but for stoic defending from Teign. That
pressure was finally lifted five minutes from time as Ryan Bougourd powered
down the right flank and fired a cross in for striker Ayres to coolly finish
his thirty-ninth goal of the season, ending any chance of Plymouth Marjons B
catching Teign in the title race.
Teign close their league season at home to Caradon on
Saturday then face Plymouth Marjons B in a mouth-watering semi-final clash in
the Devon Trophy on Sunday.
